How to Embed Yelp Reviews on Your Website: 3 Easy Methods

·Updated ·8 min read·By Mike Ragimov
Reviews being sorted and filtered, the job Yelp's recommendation software does

Yelp is the one major review platform where the business does not decide which of its reviews are public. Google shows you everything that survives its policy checks. Yelp runs automated recommendation software that sorts your reviews into recommended and not recommended, publishes the first group on your page, and holds the second behind a link. Yelp says the software weighs hundreds of factors including measurements of quality, reliability and user activity, and it re-evaluates over time, so the split is not permanent. That filter sits upstream of every method below. Before you pick an embed code, it is worth understanding what it means: the reviews your website can show are the recommended ones, and the glowing review you remember from a regular customer may not be among them.

Why Do Some of Your Yelp Reviews Not Show Up?

Because Yelp's recommendation software did not recommend them. Yelp describes it as automated software that examines hundreds of factors, including various measurements of quality, reliability and user activity, in order to decide which reviews to highlight and which to filter as potentially unreliable.

The factors are not published in detail, and Yelp does not tell you why an individual review was not recommended. What is observable is the pattern: reviews from accounts with little history, little activity, or no other reviews are the ones most often held back, and a first-time reviewer writing their only review is the classic case.

It also runs both ways. A review can move from not recommended to recommended later, as the software re-evaluates, and a recommended review can drop out. This is not something you can appeal or configure, and no widget, including ours, can surface a review Yelp is holding back.

The useful reframe is that the filter is doing work on your behalf. A page of reviews that survived an adversarial filter is a stronger signal than a page of reviews that nobody checked, which is a large part of why Yelp reviews carry the weight they do with local buyers.

Which Set of Reviews Ends Up on Your Website?

The recommended set, on every method. That is the set on your public page, and it is the set any tool can read, so the number of reviews your widget shows may be lower than the number you know you have received.

Business owners hit this most often after a good month. Eight customers said they had left a review, the page shows three new ones, and the assumption is that the widget is broken. It is not: five are sitting in the not-recommended group.

Set the expectation before you build. If your recommended count is thin, a compact rating badge showing your real average is a better use of the space than a wall of cards with visible gaps, and you can switch to the wall once the count supports it.

Why Asking Customers for Yelp Reviews Backfires

Because Yelp tells businesses not to, and its software acts on it. Yelp's position is that many businesses only ask happy customers, which biases ratings, and it says its software tries to identify reviews that appear to have been requested and not recommend them.

This is the opposite of how Google works, where asking customers for reviews is normal and Google's own guidance encourages it. Running one review-request campaign across both platforms is a common and expensive mistake: the same email that grows your Google rating can generate a batch of Yelp reviews that never reach your public page.

The practical approach is to separate the two. Ask for Google reviews directly, and for Yelp, make the profile easy to find and let it accumulate on its own. A Yelp check-in offer or a link in a footer is passive; an email asking for a Yelp review is a request, and the software is looking for exactly that shape.

What Are the Three Ways to Show Yelp Reviews on Your Site?

Manual copying is the first. Take the recommended reviews you like, rebuild them as static testimonials with the reviewer's first name, stars, date and text, and style them yourself. Free, quick, and frozen: it will not follow the recommendation filter, so a review that later drops out of the recommended set stays on your page after it has left Yelp's.

The Yelp Fusion API is the second. You register an app, get an API key, and call the business and reviews endpoints. It is the right route if you have a developer who will own the integration, and it comes with the excerpt limitation covered next.

A review widget is the third. Connect your Yelp business page, choose a layout, paste one line of HTML, and the widget tracks the recommended set as it changes. Yelp also offers its own review badges, which are quick and carry Yelp branding by design; a third-party widget is what you use when the section needs to match your site rather than Yelp's.

What Does the Fusion API Actually Return?

Short review excerpts rather than complete review text, and only a small number of them per business. If you have built a Yelp integration and wondered why every card ends mid-sentence, that is the reason: the endpoint is designed to give you a taste of the reviews and a link back to Yelp, not to hand over the review corpus.

For a lot of use cases that is genuinely fine. A rating badge needs the average and the count, and a "read our reviews on Yelp" teaser works perfectly well with excerpts because the click-through is the point.

It is a poor fit for a review wall. A wall of truncated cards reads as broken rather than as a taste, and the visitor cannot finish the sentence that was going to persuade them. If the wall is the goal, the API is the wrong tool, and knowing that before the work is scoped is worth the five minutes it takes to read this section.

How Do You Build the Yelp Reviews Widget?

Connect your Yelp business page, preview your real recommended reviews and rating, then pick from over 100 layout styles across slider, marquee, grid, list, masonry and badge families. Colours, fonts and card density all adjust, and the preview uses your own reviews so you can see immediately whether your recommended count supports the layout you had in mind.

The rating comes from your Yelp page's own aggregate rather than being derived from the cards on screen, so the number on your site matches the number a visitor finds if they check. On Yelp in particular that check is likely, because the profile is the thing local buyers already know how to look up.

The embed is one line of HTML: a Custom HTML block in WordPress, a Code block in Squarespace, the HTML iframe element in Wix, a theme section in Shopify, an Embed element in Webflow, an Embed component in Framer. Free plan, unlimited widget views, and nothing to maintain when the recommended set changes.

Where Do Yelp Reviews Carry the Most Weight?

On pages where the visitor is choosing a local business rather than a product. Yelp's authority is strongest for restaurants, salons, contractors, dentists, mechanics and the rest of the local service economy, and the Yelp logo on a card is doing recognisable work for exactly that audience.

Put the badge near the action: next to the booking button, beside the phone number, above the contact form. A visitor who is one tap from calling you is the one for whom a 4.5 with a Yelp wordmark is worth the most.

Keep the full wall to one place, and if you also show Google reviews, do not run two separate walls down the same page. Either combine them with each card badged by its source, or pick the platform your audience actually uses and let that one carry the section.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this topic

Why does my Yelp widget show fewer reviews than I have received?

Because it shows the recommended set. Yelp's automated software sorts reviews into recommended and not recommended, publishes the first group on your page and holds the second behind a link. Only the recommended reviews are public, so that is what any widget can read. No tool can surface a review Yelp is holding back.

Can I get Yelp to recommend a review that is currently hidden?

Not directly. Yelp does not accept appeals on individual recommendation decisions and does not publish the factors behind them. Reviews do move between the two states over time as the software re-evaluates, so a not-recommended review can appear later, but that is Yelp's decision rather than something you can request.

Is it against Yelp's rules to ask customers for reviews?

Yelp tells businesses not to. Its stated reasoning is that many businesses only ask happy customers, which biases ratings, and it says its software tries to identify reviews that appear to have been requested and not recommend them. That makes a Yelp review drive likely to produce reviews that never reach your public page.

Why are the reviews from the Yelp Fusion API cut off?

The API returns short review excerpts rather than complete review text, and only a small number per business. It is built to give a taste plus a link back to Yelp. That works for a rating badge or a teaser, and it produces a wall of truncated cards if you try to build a full review section from it.

Does Yelp have its own website widget?

Yelp offers review badges you can place on your site. They are quick to set up and carry Yelp branding by design, with limited layout and styling control. A third-party widget is what you use when the reviews section needs to match your own site rather than look like a piece of Yelp.

Should I show Yelp reviews or Google reviews on my site?

Whichever your buyer already trusts, which for local services is often Yelp and for most other categories is Google. If you have a strong position on both, combine them into one wall with each card badged by its source rather than running two separate review sections down the same page.
